Klinkhammer
A Klinkhammer fly is a popular fly pattern in dry fly fishing, especially in fly fishing for trout and other fish species that hunt insects floating on the surface of the water. This fly design is unique and was created by Dutch fly fisherman Hans van Klinken.
The Klinkhammer fly has the following special properties
Parachute-style hack
A Klinkhammer fly is characterized by its parachute-style hackle arrangement. This means that the hackle is tied in at an angle that allows the fly to float with the body submerged below the surface of the water and the hackle acts as a support that holds the fly above the water. It gives the fly a very realistic profile that mimics a hatching insect struggling to escape from the surface.
Displaced wing
The
Klinkhammer fly also has an offset wing, which is tied in front of the body of the fly. This wing can be made of materials such as polypropylene or duck or goose hackle. The offset wing helps increase the visibility of the fly and makes it easier for the fly fisherman to see when the fish are biting.
Variations
There are many different variations of Klinkhammer flies to match different insect species and color patterns that the fish may be interested in. This makes them useful in different fishing situations and during different seasons.
The Klinkhammer fly is an effective imitation of hatchling insects and is particularly useful when fish are active on the surface trying to catch insects floating on the water. Its unique design makes it a favorite among many dry fly anglers and has proven successful in attracting fish, especially trout, grayling and other surface hunting species.
